Don’t you love that silly song about ‘If I had a million dollars’ (if you don’t know it click here and enjoy). I always start thinking about what I would do with that $$Million, although it doesn’t seem to go as far as it used to. I do know that a Donation to Great Meadow would be in the cards! When you work for a non-profit you are always thinking of what you want to change or a wish that you could give to make something here just a little bit better. In the Spring I always think it would be great to put a nice gazebos up on Festival Hill, with a big grilling area and room for dancing. By Summer I want real bathrooms at the Polo Stadium, for the Fall I wish that we had a nice area for concerts and outdoor productions. Then when the Winter rolls around I am back to the basics and all I want is a new heat pump in the Summer House. Here at Great Meadow we are always thinking of what to do with any and all donations that come in, and since we have been here since 1984, there are many things that we need to start fixing and replacing. If you had a million dollars what would you do? If you are interested in giving even just a little bit you can donate easily on our website. Thank you for another wonderful year at Great Meadow, 2011 was fun.
Best wishes for a wonderful New Year!
To us the end of the event season is marked with the VHSL State Cross Country Meet, a very exciting event that brings almost 1,000 of the best runners in the Commonwealth to Great Meadow. Each year, for the past 19, we have watched these kids, coaches, team mates and their families, come out to Great Meadow and race for the State Championship Title. Our property and race course are transformed into what is arguably one of the best cross country 5 k courses around. The teams are always meet with a challenging run and some of the best views in the state. This year the weather is going to be just perfect for the races, a bit brisk but perfect for a weekend in November. General admission for the event is only $10 so come on out and enjoy a different type of day at the races.
Come out and enjoy the fall colors at Great Meadow this weekend on your horse. We are hosting a Trail Ride from noon-3:00 with a bonfire and hot cider after. Come out and enjoy the views and the great venue in a way that few get to enjoy it. You and your horse can pretend you have just won the Gold Cup races or Gran Prix. Rob will lead you on nice open trails up and around the Polo Field, Race Course and through the hills above Great Meadow where breathtaking views await. Right now the fall foliage is at its peak and with the crisp fall air this is going to be a perfect fall day for a ride in the meadow. The lead trail ride will start at noon at a walk/trot pace. We can find you horses for only $95 but we need advance notice.

There could not have been a better day for racing and tailgaiting at The Intertional Gold Cup! The weather was perfect for a fall race day and despite all the rain early in the week we all fared quite well. I am loving seeing all the photos posted, and hearing stories about the wonderful day. We have almost completed another great season at Great Meadow and wow what a ride it has been. Our team has worked hard and put in a lot of love, sweat and tears. But we share a vision, and we are all so happy to share it with all the folks that come through our gates each year.

One of the biggest pressures, after you find your outfit for the International Gold Cup Race is to figure out the perfect tailgate. Tailgate 101 says that you need to start with a theme, after that the rest all comes easy. The fall race is a great way to use harvest vegetables, yummy pies and warm batches of chili and other tasty treats. Don’t forget that you can enter into the Official Tailgate competition, win great prices and meet lots of fun new people, make sure that you sign up on the VA Gold Cup website. I love to just wander around and check out some of the many great items that people set out for their tailgate. I have had the pleasure of being a tailgate judge many times and let me tell you just what a privilege it is. People are so creative and really there is an art to the Tailgate.
It is also very important to make sure that you think about the drink too. The drink needs to match the flavors and the feel of the tailgate. A drink that I will be making this fall race is one I recently tried at the Scottish Games. I need a name for it, or I need to find the name. Glenfiddich 12, Ginger Ale & Apple Cider with a cinnamon stick. Yumm.
We are working hard to make Great Meadow be a beautiful place to be on October 15th. Looking foward to seeing you there.
